And just some experimenting with black and white versus colour
Beetroot, quinoa and split lentil patties
- 200 g cooked split lentils
- 200 g grated or finely chopped beetroot
- Small knob ginger
- 3-4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
- 2 teaspoons smoked paprika powder (I have found something in Alnatura called Rauchige Drecksau – that will have to do the job)
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
- salt to taste
- pepper to taste
- 200 g cooked quinoa
- 1 red onion, chopped
- 1 tablespoon chopped coriander
- 50 g ground pumpkin seeds
- 140 g gram flour (a.ka. besan, chickpea flour)
- In a food processor, blitz lentils, beets, spices and seasoning for a minute or two.
- In a mixing bowl, combine this with the cooked quinoa, chopped red onion, chopped coriander, garlic, ground pumpkin seeds, and gram flour. Mix well till it begins to hold together. Adjust seasonings.
- Refrigerate for one to two hours or so. This will make it easier to form the patties.
- Either fry in avocado oil on a pan for three to four minutes until golden on each side, or
- Brush each side lightly with avocado oil and bake in a single layer in the oven at 180 C for a total of 20 minutes, turning them over once while baking.
PS: In the photo is some cashew yoghurt stirred with the ground pumpkin seeds which I forgot to mix into the pattie mixture :-). That worked, and it ended up as an even more complete meal.
Also, the patties can be kept in the fridge for a couple of days as a convenient quick meal with a salad, or frozen.
From Pankepark Bernau to Zepernick (or that was the original plan) with Berliner Wanderclub
IN PROGRESS.
This walk was organised and led by Alexander Günther. First, a very nice guided tour of Bernau, which is an interesting place to visit. I was reminded of my erstwile plans to spend a couple of days here to get to know it, and not least its surroundings, better. Perhaps in the late summer, early autumn ….
I always forget that walks that should only take between two and three hours, when you walk with others will basically take all day. So by the time that I had thought I would be almost home with plenty of time for other things, we were only about half way, so when the opportunity arose to hop on a train back to Berlin, I grabbed it. I therefore missed the Bernau to Zepernick part.

Playing bridge in English in Berlin
Looking for people available and interested in playing bridge regularly.
“Bird-watching in English” – with VHS Pankow – in Tegeler Fließ
Another very pleasant walk, despite the constantly drizzling rain. Since it is a protected kind of wetland area, rain suits it anyway :-).
We heard many different birds, and also saw a few. I managed two not very good photos.
Also a lot of photos of raindrops on various vegetation :-).
Assignment to photograph people in parks looming
As everyone knows, I don’t like taking photos of people, and when I do, the results are always awful, showing beyond a doubt that I don’t actually like people – as a species, I mean – I just don’t think we are particularly likeable, and definitely not attractive.
But here I am, attending a photography course in which an upcoming assignment will be about people in parks. The prospect is making me lose, if not quite the will to live, then at least to take my camera out anywhere at all, so I tried to come up with a venue that was at least a little bit interesting for other reasons than just photographing random strangers, in which I have no interest whatsoever. I thought for that purpose it might be interesting to visit Thai Park. (As it turned out, it wasn’t. I honestly don’t see what all the fuss is about, and the resulting photos are worse than ever.) I might call in sick for that class.
Anyway, it was one of those rare occurrences: decent weather, so I went to Thai park, taking some, also rather bad, photos of birds on the way.
A walk in the neighbourhood and to two exhibitions 4 May
Visited Kühlhaus and the exhibition BBA Artist Prize 2023, and Willy Brandt Haus with exhibitions of works by Elias Wessel and Uwe Steinberg. Also took some awful photos with people in them in Mehringplatz.
